International Women’s Day 2018
It should go without saying that businesses should always support female employees and encourage them to grow. Happily, we have made great strides towards workplace equality in recent years. However, there is still a long way to go. In honour of International Women’s Day 2018, we have compiled a list of inspirational female entrepreneurs. Five influential women who built exciting and groundbreaking careers, often from almost nothing. These success stories show that all women are capable of greatness, with the right support and encouragement.
Coco Chanel
Truly a trailblazer, Gabrielle Chanel was born in Paris in 1883. She reinvented herself as Coco Chanel and carved a pioneering career as a fashion designer and businesswoman. To this day, the Chanel brand is highly celebrated. Synonymous with luxury, the iconic double C logo is instantly recognisable. Coco Chanel was known for her lifelong determination, ambition and energy towards her career.
Karren Brady
Known as ‘The First Lady of Football’, Karren Brady has enjoyed a highly successful career as a football executive. She was appointed managing director of Birmingham City FC at the age of just 23. She is currently the vice-chairman of West Ham United FC and was recently elevated to the House of Lords. In her career in football, a traditionally male dominated environment, she experienced sexism. However, she fought against this and is now one of the most famous and influential British female entrepreneurs.
Holly Tucker and Sophie Cornish
These inspirational businesswomen founded the highly successful website notonthehighstreet.com . This site specialises in unique and bespoke gift ideas. At the launch of the company, Tucker and Cornish were working on a shoestring budget and worked unpaid for a full year. The site has won awards and offers opportunities to small, creative businesses to sell their wares to a large audience. Holly Tucker was recently awarded an MBE for services to small businesses and enterprise.
Rachael Flanagan
This entrepreneurial woman started out as a lone cleaner, offering her services by handing out flyers. Over time, her business grew and she is now head of the ‘Mrs Bucket’ domestic cleaning company, which employs 300 people in Swansea, Cardiff, Newport and Bristol. Flanagan decided to forgo university to start ‘Mrs Bucket’. It has now been operating for over ten years and turnover reached £2.5 million in 2016.
Breaking the glass ceiling
It is so important for businesses to support their female employees and to allow women the chance to succeed. The above women have all carved very different careers, some in male dominated industries, indicating women can definitely do it all! Happy International Women’s Day!
